Early Voting

The Ranter
The Views of The Ranter

Like a lot of people my age and with my medical problems, I have signed up for early voting by mail. I love it; I can sit in the comfort of my home, however dusty and messed it may be with two teenagers running around and vote my heart out.

When the opportunity arose, I had not been yet aware of this wonderful concept, as usual I would trek to the local school to stand in line, have my identity questioned and step into the booth while my fellow Americans would patiently wait their turn. That was always an interesting concept to me, I do not do lines, nor for that matter, crowded places.

I only had two problems after Viet Nam, other than the possibility of alcoholism, which my Father in his strict Irish way nipped in the bud by informing me I would be out of the house on my butt if I did not stop. Waking on the sofa clutching an empty bottle of Jack Daniels does not fit well into the scheme of a strict Irish Catholic home. I could not tolerate crowds, even worse someone invading my personal space and I hated lines, just as most veterans’ complain of today.

The crowds were a real problem for me when I joined the other male members of my family and became a Police Office. It is difficult for crowd control if you are unable to deal with their very existence. I worked and overcame that problem somewhat, but not entirely. As far as too many people standing next to me and in my space, that is a problem to this day, I will walk out of the room to avoid going off the deep end. Even someone I love, my wife, friends who I trust my very existence with, if they are too close and there is more than one I tend to have problems.

Therefore, when I became aware of voting by mail I jumped at the chance, filling out the necessary papers and waiting for my ballot. I have learned the hard way that this can be a frustrating experience. Early voting tabulation, or early polls, who the heck knows, but they drive me nuts.

I recently sent in my ballot and that night was watching the news telling me the local issues that were going to pass and fail. This really made me feel good, as usual, the media can ruin a perfectly good day. I have no idea where they get their data, early tabulation, calling homes, or a crystal ball, but they need to shut the hell up until every voter has cast their vote and the polls are closes. Sitting in your easy chair and trying to vote on an issue that is important to you and hearing on the news that it will fail makes me want to wake up with the bottle of Jack again!

The media has caught heat before for calling winners before the polls have closed; now they are doing it even before the polls have opened! In addition, they wonder why there is little voter turnout, why should people get out of their house if the winners are already announced.

If I have to, I go to the Courthouse and Vote early, but I usually get my crutches out and haul my one-legged ass up to the Poll on Election Day and climb the stairs and fight all those damn doors that damn-near take Hulk Hogan to open, just so I can give other people some SHIT when they tell me its TOO MUCH TROUBLE to go vote !!

And they better not tell me they didnt vote and then proceed to bitchin about their elected officials..

Once I get to the polls tho, I have never had to wait in a line or suffer with crowds.. I hand em my registration card and they mark the roll and hand me a ballot..

My eyes do not let me get around as I used to, legs, or bus. I like home voting now. I also find it interesting you and I both back up our words with our vote. Perhaps we learned a few things as vets, but I think it is just because unlike a lot of others, we care.

I consider my VOTIN to be a DUTY, just like ownin my guns for self-protection and home defense..

And also, just like my guns, I feel it a responsibility to educate myself and stay proficient in my exercise of BOTH !!

I'm very vocal in my community about my endorsements of both the Second Amendment and my Political Choices..

I live in a HIGHLY (D) section of Texas, so that makes me about as popular as a turd in a punchbowlaround here.. And also the locals seem to resent the fact that I can protect myself and dont have to call the P.D. to report a problem that needs investigatin.. I call em pretty regular to report other peoples problems and suspicious activity, but when it has to deal WITH ME, I just call em and have em come take the person to jail that I have captured at gunpoint !! It would do your big ol heart good to see some dirtbag beggin for the cops to take em to jail and get em away from me !! Hell, it gives me the "warm fuzzies" just thankin bout it again !!

But somebody raisin hell about politics and their elected officials, AND NOT VOTIN, is about like the person that complains about gas prices then leaves the house to go start the motor in their car and sit there talkin on their cell phone for 30 minutes before leavin the driveway !!

Man of my own soul. You know I am an ex cop and yes, I carry and have a permit. (Not stupid)

The problem my brother it is people like us who protect others and we are the ones that take the heat for it. Pure crap.

A year ago I wrote about an incident where I punched a guy who had hit his little girl in the face. I was cuffed and would have paid the price had it not been for all the Mothers screaming at the responding police. Would I do it again, in a heartbeat.

We are the sheepdogs and we tend to get neutered for it.

I had about the same experience in the parkin lot of out local Wal-Mart a few years ago..

I parked and when I got out, the fella in the truck next to me was slappin his wife, and it went downhill from there till he told me he was gonna kill me.. I drug him thru the open window and gave him a well-deserved ass whoopin..

The cops were really frownin on me till they did a CCH on him and found that he had a yard-long sheet for gun-related crimes, and that he was out on bail at the time for armed robbery.. Then they made my nites-stay in jail as comfortable as possible.. That was the last I ever heard anythang about it.. Oh yeah.. I did get a birthday card from his wife last September, tellin me he had gotten killed in August and that she still remembered me and wanted to say "Thanks" ..
